# Acting chief justice Raymond Zondo says former president Jacob Zuma needs to be applauded for signing off on the creation of the office of the chief justice. This was the first phase of making the judiciary independent in the country. Zondo says in 2010 chief justice Sandile Ngcobo appointed a team or committee that conducted research and they proposed the establishment of the office of the chief justice:
