Iran’s Guardian Council approves six presidential candidates

# Iran’s Guardian Council has approved six candidates out of 80 applicants, for the snap presidential election slated for June 28. Four female candidates were disqualified. The winner will replace the late Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash last month. Five approved candidates are hardliners, with Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf being the most prominent. Only one represents the reformist camp. The election occurs amid tensions with the West over Iran’s support for Russia in Ukraine and its nuclear programme.
