# The Gauteng Department of Social Development has reaffirmed its commitment to combat human trafficking, by launching its Trafficking in Persons Week commemoration. According to a 2023 Human Sciences Research Council report, it is estimated that a possible 250-thousand people have fallen victim to human trafficking in South Africa alone. The department says it aims to raise awareness, particularly among school children, about the dangers of human trafficking, with a strong focus on prevention and education.
