# Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, has expressed concern about the rise in myopia among school children globally. Also known as shortsightedness, myopia is an eye condition where someone cannot see objects far away clearly. It is estimated that more than 740 million myopia cases will be recorded worldwide by 2050. The department’s spokesperson, Motalatale Modiba, says myopia is common among children aged between six and 14 years:
