Experts advocate for SA’s R530 child-support grant to be raised

# Experts are advocating for South Africa’s 530-rand child-support grant to be raised. The rate reportedly falls 30-percent below the 760-rand food poverty line, with 40-percent of working-age South Africans unemployed and 55-percent in dire poverty. Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity’s Mervyn Abrahams, says the grant supports 13.2-million children but inadequately meets nutritional needs. He suggests capping utility tariffs, expanding VAT-exempt food items, and aligning the grant with the food poverty line to alleviate child hunger.
