# Eight suspects have been arrested for theft and vandalism of electricity infrastructure across Gauteng since last month. This follows Eskom’s efforts to address increasing incidents of illegal electricity-related activities. Two suspects lost their lives due to electrocution as they tampered with the electricity equipment in separate incidents. Eskom spokesperson Amanda Qithi says copper theft costs the economy between five- and seven-billion-rand a year, and Eskom spends about two-billion-rand a year replacing stolen cables:
