# The City of Cape Town says gun violence is one of the key reasons why it is battling to drive down the murder rate. The Western Cape is among four provinces that made up 83-percent of murders in the second quarter of the 2023/2024 financial year. Mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says over the past week alone five illegal firearms were confiscated in just 14 hours in Philippi, Kalksteenfontein, Mfuleni, Hanover Park and Bellville South:
