Beijing quashed political dissent in Hong Kong by a security law in 2020 after violent protests the year before. Many opposition figures fled abroad, while others have been arrested and sentenced to years in jail. Hong Kong this week announced rewards of around 2.4-million-rand for information leading to the arrest of six individuals now living abroad.
